By Annie St. Francis – Reprinted with permission from The Repository Project The Backyard Homestead: Produce all the food you need on just a quarter acre! An excellent source of inspiration and ideas for anyone just starting out, and seriously interested in the self-sufficiency of a small scale homestead. Editor Carleen Madigan shares great tips for success in every aspect of a small homestead from garden planning for maximum plant diversity and production to the summer fun of making your own ice cream.
Lots of extras are built into each enjoyably readable chapter. Recommendations for raspberries includes region specific recommendations for variety selections. Her chapter on fruit trees includes primers on pollination, pruning, and a recipe for old-fashioned peach preserves. Essential herbs capture the imagination, and Madigan covers the subject well with an overview of 32 popular choices. Discover flavored vinegars and learn to make your very own herbal teas. Explore the possibility of growing wheat, and expand the ways in which you cook with grains. Add grape vines to your garden, and perhaps nut trees too. Keep chickens, turkeys, ducks, and geese. Goats. Sheep. Cattle. Rabbits. The Backyard Homestead shares important perspective and tips for the small scale care and keeping of farm animals to meat preservation including the use of smokehouses. Homesteaders also have a great love of dairy for all its uses, and this title covers the basics of making delicious cheese, and the special treat of homemade ice cream just right for a sundae or summer cone.
The Backyard Homesteadincludes helpful resources for each of the subjects, a bibliography of other Storey books readers might find interesting and helpful, a USDA Hardiness Zone Map for gardeners and growers, a selection of municipal codes related to the keeping of chickens, and a well organized subject index.

“Words mean nothing to liberals. They say whatever will help advance their cause at the moment, switch talking points in a heartbeat, and then act indignant if anyone uses the exact same argument they were using five minutes ago.” – Ann Coulter
Editorial Comment When a political movement changes the definitions of words to suit – or to advance forward – an agenda, we should all recognize that they are – at the same time – moving the goal posts of the truth. They do this because truth – for them – is relative. Truth is not based on a universally held belief, nor is it based on provable facts. Truth is, from this point of view, transient, and words mean whatever the Left wants them to mean in the moment. This may seem more an inconvenience than a danger, but very dangerous indeed it is.

“The Chinese naval buildup comes after a series of escalations from Beijing toward Taiwan, a democratic country and American ally. In March, China flew 54 flights into Taiwanese airspace and another 25 in early April. The aggressive behavior coincided with incursions into the South China Sea, including 220 ships landing within one of the U.S. Navy’s defense perimeters, leaving questions about the territorial security of Taiwan.”
“…. everything I have said today is not a bluff – it is not a bluff, believe me – and … those who live in the past … unable to look into the future … [should] stop rocking the boat we are all in which is called the Earth.” VLADIMIR PUTIN, 1 MARCH 2018
We may be in more trouble than we initially thought.
This essay by JR Nyquist about Russian military capability may be one of his most concerning yet. It is a follow-up to his previous article which we commented on, AVAILABLE HERE. Please read the entire post, then see the summary points below.
In his State of the Nation Address, Vladimir Putin said, “Russia ranks among the world’s leading nations with a powerful … defense potential,” Putin added, “The next few years will prove decisive.” Then the Russian leader adopted the tone of that kinder guy whose soul George W. Bush claimed to have glimpsed. Putin admonished his countrymen that Russia must not fall behind technologically. Cities must be expanded and other “large-scale” projects must be embraced. Putin spoke of “family farms” and shrinking the state’s share of the economy by state sponsorship of “start-up entrepreneurs.” With these and other deceptive flourishes, the Russian President plodded toward a stunning presentation. The speech turned from boring promises of a shiny socialist future (without using the “s” word), to Stalin’s trick of making his victims soil themselves.
Editorial Comment: So, to summarize JR Nyquist’s assessment of Russia’s capabilities:
1. They have increased their long-range high-precision weapons carriers by 12 times, and the number of guided cruise missiles by over 30 times.
2. They now have the Sarmat missile, which weighs over 200 tons, and can launch 10 large warheads, 16 smaller ones, or a hypersonic boost-glide vehicle.
3. They have developed nuclear powered strategic arms (missiles) that do not use ballistic trajectories – this means that they are unpredictable, and therefore, virtually undefeatable.
4. A nasty little submersible drone that can travel up to 185 kilometers per hour and can withstand a depth of 1000 meters – oh, and it can carry a 200 megaton cobalt 59 nuclear warhead that can create a 500 foot tidal wave on any of our coastal cities, and render the area uninhabitable for years.
5. They have successfully tested and deployed a hypersonic aircraft missile system that is not 5 times faster than the speed of sound, it is 10 times faster than the speed of sound. Aircraft carriers are defenseless against it.
6. They have hypersonic high-precision weapons systems that can hit targets at intercontinental distances and adjust their altitude and course as they travel.
7. They have troops that have been armed with laser weapons for at least a year.
It may be time for a serious reassessment of American military capabilities… Nyquist raises a number of significant concerns. Among these, we have the useless and failed F35 aircraft that tears itself apart when it engages it’s gatling gun. We also have the Ford CVN nuclear powered aircraft carrier, which after four years still has not completed its post-delivery test and trial period. We are woefully behind in our defensive capability, and the direction of the current administration leaves much to be concerned about.
Editor’s Comment: Advances in technology are often both fascinating and terrifying.
We see within these the ways in which life can be improved, and history is replete with examples. The convenience of electricity. Life saving medicines. Travel made possible with commercial flight. In big ways, and small ways, life is more comfortably and longer lived in the presence of innovation and invention.
The danger for all of us lies in the use of these very same technologies for dreaded and dark purposes. Evil coexists with good, and its presence cannot be denied. The electricity on which we’ve become so dependent could be taken from us in a cyber attack, or with the sudden strike of an EMP. Modern life-sustaining and life-saving medicines, now produced and traded internationally, might be withheld in an act of economic retaliation, or an act of war. Organs intended for transplantation are said to be harvested in some countries from the condemned, but while these human beings – no matter their alleged crimes – remain living. In acts of terrorism, planes are hijacked and used as weapons against the very cultures and countries that made the celebration of flight possible. We should never forget the horror of September 11th even as we mark the 20th anniversary of that terrible day in 2021.
Within this context, we should consider carefully how robotics has changed our world, and will continue to do so. Some of these applications will save life. Others will extinguish it. Without so much as a moment of human hesitation, robots with the capacity to kill will do so on command, and absent any conscience. In the hands of the soulless whose decisions are made with little more than the press of a button, there will be no mercy. Distant to pain and suffering and death, robotics will make too easy the decision of one human being to end the life of another, or perhaps many millions of others.

Editor’s Comments: If you own an Android smart phone, you are using the Google Android Operating System, unless you have installed an alternative such as Lineage OS. Nearly everyone should be aware by now that Google spies on it’s “customers”, logging their location data, tracking everything they look at in Google Chrome (if you haven’t downloaded and switched to Brave Browser, do it now), and every single email that they send and receive with their Gmail account. You might as well leave your living room and your bedroom curtains open all day and all night, because that is exactly what you are doing electronically with your smart phone.
Read the article linked above. Be aware of the data you are sharing, either knowingly or unknowingly. There are some changes you can make right now that can reduce the amount of data you are providing to them by installing a VPN, such as NORDVPN, and setting the controls so that it is always on, and starts when you boot your phone. Set the “kill switch” so that your data stops if the VPN server goes down, and for goodness sake, from within the VPN interface, change the DNS settings to something other than Google’s DNS servers (which are 22.214.171.124 and 126.96.36.199). Change them to Cloudfare’s servers, as an example, which are 188.8.131.52 and 184.108.40.206. If you do not want a VPN, for some reason (I’m unaware of any reason NOT to use one), you can install the Cloudfare DNS App.
We have more ideas in this article, and will continue to update and provide as much information as we possibly can to help you reduce your electronic footprint, regain some of your privacy, and stop providing the giant data miners and multiple government agencies with a complete record of your daily life. You have the right to privacy, but you have to actively exercise it… you can no longer take it for granted.

Editorial Comment Perhaps the role and responsibilities of the USPS should be carefully considered following a thorough and transparent public investigation of all of the above. As is the case with many institutions, there are many dedicated employees who work hard to provide the best service possible to the public. It is especially unfortunate given the investment of those so dedicated, that co-existing with them would be the rot of corruption. This must be resolved, and the integrity of our institutions restored.

Russian troops are massing on the Ukraine border, Chinese vessels are swarming Whitsun Reef of the Philippines in the South China Sea, and China’s air force is flying almost daily through Taiwan’s air-defense identification zone. Chinese troops for almost a year have been dug in deep in Indian-controlled Ladakh in the Himalayas. Two large aggressors are threatening to break apart neighbors and absorb them.

The Scales of Justice
Editorial comment: Whether or not any person accused can ever receive due process, a true and accurate finding of facts, and a verdict based in the law, is in question. Doubts are understandably created in environments where there is any attempt to intimidate or otherwise influence one or more parties to a case. This is true whether those efforts are aimed at the prosecution, the defense, the judge, the jury, the victim, or the accused. It is also true whether those efforts are aimed at parties to a case directly, or indirectly by way of harm threatened to a person’s family, friends, workplace, place of worship, or surrounding community. Mob action – even the threat of mob action – should not be tolerated. Serious and sobering questions must be raised. We must consider justice within the context of the Constitution for the sake our Republic and every citizen within it. The fact that politicians involve themselves in active cases, despite their leadership responsibilities, is terribly troubling. All of this is before us as a nation, even as we also understand that beneath the great weight of it, are human tragedies involving two men whose life paths intersected on one fateful day, Derek Chauvin and George Floyd.
By Annie St. Francis – Reprinted with permission from The Repository Project Morse code is a way to communicate using dots and dashes to represent letters and numbers. It’s a universal language, and was developed by Samuel Morse, and used as an effective way to communicate via telegraph. First used in the mid-1840s, Morse telegraphy transmitted communications by making indentations on a paper tape in response to electrical signals. Clock style mechanics moved the paper tape along as the message was being received. This is a fascinating part of communications history. Still used today by amateur radio operators, Morse code is an especially useful tool for communicating during times of emergency and poor radio conditions including sunspots and CMEs. Many hobbyists understand the value of preserving this skill, and sharing it with others just discovering an interest in radio!
Ready to learn a new language? Here are a few tips to help you get started!
1) Learn the basic signals, and study the Morse code alphabet. There are many who believe that the study should be focused significantly on the training of the ear. This is understandable since Morse code communicates with the use of sound. There are also more visual learning strategies. Do read on!
2) Practice saying the “dits” and “dahs” out loud and in the correct ratio and rhythm. A “dah” should last about three times as long as a “dit” when spoken. As you practice the sounds, the length of each will come more and more naturally – and very much like the native language we use in our daily lives.

Freedom of speech is fundamental to our Republic, and to the liberty of all people. It is a Constitutional right, our 1st Amendment, and must be protected. Attacks on freedom of speech are at the core of much of the news being reported, and this should not be lost on any thinking American. What is happening here, in our great nation, is certainly not lost on the world. It wasn’t long ago that people across the globe were celebrating what was sure to be the reelection of Donald J. Trump to a second term in office. Dancing. Cheering. Carrying signs and banners through the streets. How uplifting it was to see people from countries near and far celebrating true leadership with a commitment to the restoration of human liberty here – and everywhere.
So much has changed, and it is – and will remain – my personal belief that election fraud was widespread. The 2020 Presidential election was stolen. The fact that so much effort has been made to silence those who have spoken up up seems only to prove this point – that there is much the political thieves must hide. Every one involved in the theft of this election should be ashamed, but they appear to know no shame.
Many who object have had their Facebook and Twitter accounts suspended, sometimes permanently. There have been attempts to take down emerging social media alternatives including Gab, Parler, and Mike Lindell’s FrankSpeech.
Censorship is reaching into military service with questions being asked of naval officers whose political affiliations are Republican and Conservative. The very thought that military service should be tied to political affiliation in the United States of America is outrageous.
Election auditors have been threatened and menaced, and at least one reported receiving the offer of a bribe in exchange for his silence on the subject of election fraud. Some have lost their jobs.
Juries responsible for deciding court cases – involving the fates of the accused – are being asked to do so in the face of angry mobs and uncontrolled riots who clearly intend to influence those judgments. No case should ever be decided by a jury under any kind of threat, nor any punishment upon conviction meted out by a mob.
Our 45th President, Donald J. Trump, has been blocked at just about every turn – through his internet presence, in the proceedings of Congress, and in the courts. He was subjected to all manner of political manipulation in the course of his candidacy, during the time of his presidency, and even now that he is no longer in the office. Again, I say it. This was an election he rightfully and fairly won.
President Trump is not alone. The thoughts and ideas of those who do not conform to interests of the radical Communist left routinely suffer censorship, and the consequences of cancel culture.
Make your political voices heard, America. Be informed. Get involved at your local political precinct levels. Speak up. Do not cower, and in so doing, allow your views and voices to be silenced. We are standing on the right side of history, and we will prevail – honestly, truthfully, peacefully, and lawfully – we will prevail.
